A lot of news today, so I'll keep my comments short.

New Markets:
Gryphonwood is a new fantasy magazine, looking
for short stories, flash fiction, poetry, artwork, reviews, etc.
Debuted September 15, 2004. Guidelines
Insidious Reflections is looking for dark and
twisted tales in any genre. Guidelines
Market Changes:
New Camp Horror magazine's Dark Idol
contest deadline has been extended due to the storms in Florida.
The original plan had been to announce winners around October 1st,
but there is no firm deadline. There is one prize: an agent and a
public relations company. No fee. Website.
Lullaby Hearse has changed it's mailing address
to: 205 Linn St., Ithaca NY 14850. Guidelines.
Note: The editor cannot currently change the address on the web
site.
Cyberpulp Magazine has a new web address: http://cyberpulp1.tripod.com/cpnavigation.htm.
Aurealis has a new web address (http://www.aurealis.sf.org.au/)
and new editors beginning in October: Robert Hoge and Ben Payne,
replacing Keith Stevenson. New contact information will be
forthcoming after October.
Damned Nation, the Death Grip anthology,
has moved the opening date for submissions up one month to
October 1, 2004. They will be accepting submissions until March
31, 2005. See their new guidelines.
Whispering Spirits has new submissions
guidelines. Check them out here
Not One of Us is now looking for submissions for
their next issue. "Not One of Us is about people (or
things) out of place in their surroundings, outsiders, social
misfits, aliens in the SF senseanyone excluded from society
for whatever the reason." Guidelines.
Closed Markets:
Yellow Bat Review and Yellow Bat Review
Online, publications of Yellow Bat Press, are currently
on hiatus and closed to submissions.
Artichoke Down Press, a small press print publisher for
speculative fiction, is not replying to e-mails and their website
has been down for months. This market is considered dead.
Although its website says it is always open to submissions, S1ngularity
-- the speculative fiction webzine -- seems to have been closed
by its publisher.
Champagne Shivers, a horror market, is
temporarily closed to submissions. Guidelines.
Dated Markets (Anthologies, Contests, Special and Themed
Issues):
Flytrap is open to submissions for issue 4 from
September 15 to October 31, 2004, to be published in May, 2005.
Looking for fiction up to 5,000 words, any genre including cross-genre
and experimental. Guidelines.
The annual Soul-Making Literary Competition "is
open to everyone, everywhere and looks for original, freshly
creative and finely crafted works that embraces all creative
interpretations of English poet, John Keats' statement:
Some say the world is a vale of tears, I say it is a place of
soul-making Deadline: November 30, 2004. Entry fee: $5 US For

The fifth annual Mona Schreiber Prize for Humorous Fiction
and Nonfiction is looking for "comedic essays, articles,
short stories, poetry, shopping lists and other forms", up
to 750 words long. $5 fee. Website.
Yellow Bat Press is gathering flash fiction (up to 1000
words long) for an e-anthology titled Crown of Bones.
"We are looking for work that is dark, creepy, strange,
eerie, and bizarre." For more information, check their
website.
The Mid-Atlantic Horror Professionals is gathering
submissions for an anthology to be published in 2005. This group
is looking for "Horror short stories, poetry and artwork
with all or part of the Mid-Atlantic region involved in some way
not just as a passing mention." Deadline is January
15, 2005. Website.
The University of New Orleans has announced its First
Annual Writing Contest for Study Abroad in Europe. Writers in
English, who have not published a book of 45 pages or more in the
same genre as that of their entry, are eligible. Prizes awarded
in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. There is an entry fee
of $20, but winners have their choice of three European writing
workshops. Deadline is January 30, 2005. For more details, see: Website.
All Destiny.com, The Spiritual, Supernatural
& Paranormal Webzine, is celebrating its second birthday
online with its first All Destiny Short Story Competition.
They are open to science fiction, fantasy, supernatural and
horror stories, 1000 to 5000 words long. No entry fee, due date
March 31, 2005. For more details, see their web page.
Tom Howard Books is sponsoring the annual Tom Howard/John
H. Reid Short Story Contest. "Any type of original short
story, essay or other work of prose is eligible." The
submission period is between August 1 and March 31 of every year.
$10 reading fee. Website.
The Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest is looking for "the
best parody poem that has been sent to a 'vanity poetry contest'
as a joke." Entries accepted August 15, 2004 to April 1,
2005. No fees. Website.
InkSpotter's 2nd Annual Finding the Right
Words Flash Fiction Contest is open to fiction submissions of
500 words or less on the theme 'Second Chances.' Entry fee $1.
Deadline July 21, 2005. See their web page for more information,

News:
Friends of author Trish Jensen and fellow authors are
raising money for her hospital bills by selling critiques by
published authors. "Writers and readers interested in
purchasing critiques or autographed books --- please check [the
website] on or near Oct. 1 for a full list of critiques and books
to be auctioned." For more details, see their website

Our Losses:
Harvey Wheeler died September 6, 2004. He co-authored
the 1962 nuclear disaster novel Fail-Safe with Eugene
Burdick.
