It's been a very exciting week, with SpaceShipOne winning the
X Prize! I saw their premier flight on June 21 simply by chance
and found it inspiring. My only regret is that the Canadian Da
Vinci Project had to delay their launch of the Wildfire rocket to
wait for the delivery of some key components for the rocket.

New Markets:
Active Bladder: Publishing the kind of c-r-a-p
your mother warned you about... A new print publisher, they
publish suspenseful genre novels. Pays 30% net royalty. Website (click

AntiMuse, an online literary/arts/culture
publication for people who don't like literary journals, looks
for all genres, but needs more humour and genre fiction. Website
Claw & Quill: Modern Fables is a new
speculative fiction magazine looking for "stories that
involve animals in a fantasticused in the literary sensemanner."

Dragon Tooth Fantasy, Double Dragon Publishing's new
fantasy imprint, is looking for "manuscripts of any type of
fantasy: heroic, mythic, sword and sorcery, urban, contemporary,
magical realism, dark fantasy and any other stories in which
magic plays a pivotal role." Guidelines
Double Dragon Publishing has also opened a new romance
imprint, Dragon's Heart Romance. Guidelines.
The Victoria Literary Times is looking for
submissions of serialized novels, poetry and short fiction.
"We're looking for 'good reads' - stories that arise from
the interaction of complex characters in complex relationships
and have strong narrative line, believable people and fresh
perspectives. Novels must have enough momentum to carry the
reader forward from instalment to instalment." Queries

Market Changes:
Hodder and Stoughton is dropping three imprints: Coronet
(mainstream), NEL (horror and thrillers)and Flame (young
and contemporary). The books that would have been published under
these imprints will now be published only under the name of
Hodder & Stoughton. Article.
Abyss & Apex is now accepting Flash Fiction
submissions ONLY (up to 1000 words) and ONLY until October 31st,
2004. It is still closed to other fiction and poetry submissions.

Book of Dark Wisdom has raised its pay rates --
it now pays 1 - 5 cents per word for original, quality dark
fiction. Guidelines.
The British Fantasy Society's publishing imprint, BFS
Publications, has a new editor: Paul Kane. Return times are
now three months. They accept subs from members and non-members
of the Society. Contact them at specialpublications

Closed Markets:
High Country Publishers is full through 2005, and not
accepting new manuscripts.
Horror Carousel is overbooked and closed to new
submissions. They may open again in January 2005.
Dated Markets (Anthologies, Contests, Special and Themed
Issues):
Flash Me Magazine is hosting a Lightning Flash
Fiction Contest. They accept all genres, but stories must be
under 250 words long and previously unpublished. Deadline:
December 31, 2004. Website.
Stephen Jones is compiling horror stories for his next volume
of The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror. Stories must have
been first published between December 2003 and December 2004.
Deadline is February 1, 2005. Website.
News:
October 4, 2004: SpaceShipOne wins the coveted X Prize
-- 10 million dollars goes to designer Burt Rutan and financial
backer Paul Allen -- who, by the way, put over 20 million dollars
into the project. SpaceShipOne is the first privately-made space
vehicle to fly higher than 62 miles twice in five days. This may
be the beginning of commercial space flight! Article.
Our Losses:
Tim Choate died on September 24, 2004 in a motorcycle
accident. The actor played Zathras on Babylon 5.
Shimon Wincelberg died September 29, 2004 at the age of
80. He wrote screenplays for the original Star Trek series
and for Lost in Space, among other shows.
Janet Leigh, the actress best known for being killed in
the shower in Psycho, died October 3, 2004, at the age of
77. Article.
