The Word in Writing by B.J. Muntain
Vol 1, Issue 18, November 17, 2004
We have a good mixture of markets this week, from poetry
contests to steamy flash fiction, to children's television, to
big names like Avalon and Tor/Forge. Enjoy!
I do not guarantee any markets
New Markets:
Here is an example of a non-fiction market looking for fiction.
HipsandCurves.com, a lingerie site, is looking for
"steamy, flash fiction stories with well-rounded women and
sexy lingerie." CLICK HERE
Fusing Horizons, Dark Fiction for Imaginative
Readers, is looking for just that. Editor Gary Fry says,
"I'm interested in memorable fiction, the kind of tale from
which the bones of a plot might be removed and passed around a
camp-fire, and yet which gains something - hell, maybe a great
deal - from a conscientious reading." CLICK HERE.
He is also looking for novellas for a collection titled Bernie
Hermann's Manic Quartet, four dark novellas to fuse
your horizons. CLICK HERE
Radical Sheep is seeking new show ideas for television
for children aged 6 to 18. "Radical Sheep Productions is
committed to developing, producing and exploiting innovative,
entertaining and high quality television programming for
children's and youth audiences." CLICK HERE
Market Changes:
Avalon is seeking submissions of 'Chick Lit Lite' books.
"The heroine should be a single women in her 20s or 30s,
career driven, who has real problems everyone can relate to."
They are also interested in amateur sleuth mysteries, especially
those starring middle-aged women as amateur sleuths. As well,
they're looking for regional stories, Holiday stories and books
that focus on animals. Avalon is no longer looking for romantic
suspense or the paranormal. CLICK HERE
Tor/Forge Assistant Editor, Anna Genoese, who acquires
fantasy and women's fiction (including paranormal romance),
points those interested in submitting a paranormal romance to the
guidelines here: CLICK HERE.
She is also interested in original ghost stories. Forge
also publishes women's fiction (contemporary, historical
westerns, Chick Lit and other women's fiction) but no romance.
Editor Paul Stevens acquires most of Forge's Chick Lit. Tor
also buys Young Adult science fiction and fantasy, under the
Editorship of Susan Chang. CLICK HERE
Tesseract Books is now looking for stories by Canadian
writers for their Tesseracts10 anthology. Rumour
has it, since Tesseracts9 is running late, that the due
date for submissions to Tesseracts10 will be extended to
sometime in 2005. This is not yet reflected on their website,
however. CLICK HERE
Medium Rare Books Publishing is on hiatus until 2005.
Although it doesn't say so on the site (yet, anyway), it seems it
is turning from horror to literary. They will still publish the Absinthe
anthology, but all other projects have been cancelled. CLICK HERE

in publication.
