Here we are, already, at Issue 20! Why, it seems like just 5
months ago I started writing this column! I've learned a lot of
really interesting things doing this -- like you've got to
research your market before you send something there. That's why
I try to include websites with the markets I use.

New Markets:
Coscom Entertainment is looking for manuscripts in all
genres, including poetry. An e-publisher, they will publish some
books in hardcover on a case-by-case basis. Query first. They
don't have their own website yet, but you can find their

Shadows of Saturn is a new online magazine
looking for "dark science fiction, fantasy, and slipstream
stories with horror elements." CLICK HERE
DawnSky is an on-line magazine publishing
speculative fiction, science fiction, hard science fiction and

Market Changes:
Weird Tales has a new web page: CLICK HERE.
Snowbooks, a new small independent publisher, has a new
address: Snowbooks Ltd 120 Pentonville Road, London, N1 9JN. CLICK HERE
Red Dress Ink is open to various genres of chick-lit,
including thrillers, ethnic, and the paranormal -- as long as the
book has modern relevance and relatability. Query

The Tom Howard poetry contest has a new web site: CLICK HERE
Cemetery Dance has a new pay scale: 3 - 5 cents
per word, plus two contributor's copies, to a maximum of $150 for

Grave Tales has changed their guidelines. Check

Argosy Magazine is changing its name to Argosy
Quarterly. Argosy is also closed to submissions. CLICK HERE
NFG, a Canadian fiction and poetry magazine
which only accepts submissions through its web site, is currently
having web server problems. Submissions may be lost because of
this, so you may not want to submit there just now. CLICK HERE
Closed Markets:
Testosterone, a horror anthology with a
masculine theme, has been placed on hold with its publication
date unknown. It is now closed to all submissions.
Lone Wolf Publications, anthology publisher, has ceased
operations. "All proposed future titles are hereby canceled."
Story House is closed to submissions until May 1,

Dated Markets (Anthologies, Contests, Special and Themed
Issues):
Calling All Saints and Sinners is a short fiction/poetry
contest. "We want the stories from your strolls through the
garden of Good and Evil. Wickedness encouraged." No entry
fee given. Deadline: January 19, 2005. CLICK HERE
Razor-Edged Arcanum has extended the time
they're accepting submissions until January 31, 2005. They are
looking for heroic fantasy. CLICK HERE
Leisure Books/Chizine Flash Contest is looking for
entries under 500 words about 'Memory.' No entry fee. Deadline:
January 31, 2005. CLICK HERE
Grimm Magazine is holding a contest for short
stories, poems or visuals with the theme: "Your
interpretation of grim/Grimm. Any style is acceptable as long as
it is bold, brave, and contemporary." Entry fee: $8 (4
pounds). Deadline: February 1, 2005. CLICK HERE
New Age Voices 2005 Contest offers publication to the
31 winners of different lines, which include Vampire fiction,
Paranormal fiction, short stories, thrillers, mysteries, science
fiction/fantasy/futuristic fiction and several romance lines. No

Between the Sheets is a contest focussing on love
scenes. Entry fee: $20. Deadline: February 14th, 2005. CLICK HERE
In Places Between: The Robyn Herrington Memorial Short
Fiction Competition, formerly the Con-Version Short Story
Contest, is accepting submissions of science fiction, fantasy
or horror stories up to 5000 words. Entry fee: $10. Deadline:

The Clarke-Bradbury Science Fiction Competition For 2005
has a theme of 'The Space Elevator.' No entry fee. Deadline is

The Third Annual Haunted Hearts competition for Gothic

News:
Liverpool University Press is looking for artist Robert
Adragna (or his estate) for permission to use one of his
paintings on the next volume of History of the Science Fiction
Magazine. Any information will be gratefully received by
Andrew Kirk at Liverpool University Press at andrewk@liverpool.ac.uk.
Analog Science Fiction and Fact (previously Astounding)
is celebrating it's 75th anniversary with it's January/February
issue. Featured is the beginning of "The Stonehenge Gate",
a serial by Jack Williamson, now 96 years old, "whose work
has now appeared in the magazine in eight consecutive decades."

Salmon Publishing, a literary publisher in Ireland, is
offering Writing Residencies in Co. Clare. "Above all, these
residencies are for writers who wish to quietly work in a very
peaceful location; to develop their writing in an environment
which is truly supportive." CLICK HERE
Our Losses:
Pierre Berton, 1920 - November 30, 2004. While Berton
is best known for his books on Canadian history, he also wrote The
Secret World of Og, a children's fantasy.
Maxine Komlos/O'Leary passed away in mid-November, 2004.
She was married to astronomer Michael O'Leary, and wrote the SF
book Transmat.
Irwin Donenfeld died on November 29th, 2004, at the age
of 78. He was DC comics' editorial director and publisher.
Bob Haney died on November 27th, 2004, at the age of 78.
One of the Silver Age comics greats, he wrote for DC comics.
Trina Schart Hyman died on November 19th, 2004, at the
age of 65. A writer and illustrator of children's fantasies, she
was once awarded the Caldecott Medal.
