We have a lot to catch up on today, so let's get right to it.

New Markets:
Flashing Swords, a new e-zine dedicated to
"sword and sorcery, sword and planet, and swashbuckling
historicals" is open to submissions as of December 15, 2004.
The first issue will debut in January, 2005. CLICK HERE
Kopfhalter, a new magazine being put out by
Coscom Entertainment, is looking for "dark fiction that
breaks down the boundaries of the Horror Genre." I can't
find information on the Coscom site, but this was reported on the
Ralan site at: CLICK HERE.
Market Changes:
Harlequin Mills & Boon's Temptation line
(M&B Sensual Romance) is accepting submissions of
"a feel-good experience, focusing on the kind of
relationships that women between the ages of 18 and 35 aspire to."

Frothing At The Mouth's issue 4 is being delayed
to January. Some submissions may have been lost -- if you have
submitted, please check to be sure your submission has been

Bloodsample.net is in communicado right now,
with its web site down and e-mail not working. CLICK HERE
Dark Legacy has dropped the use of reading
periods and is open to submissions year round. CLICK HERE
The managing editor of Tangent Online, Chris Markwyn,
is leaving as of January 31, 2005, after filling in for Dave
Truesdale, senior editor, for the last year. If no replacement is
found, the site will go on indefinite hiatus. (Note: Their
website seems to be down at this time.)
Closed Markets:
Amazing Stories is on indefinite hiatus. Jeff
Berkwits, Amazing's new editor-in-chief, denies the
magazine is closing. Issue number 608 (January 4) will be
published as planned, but further submissions are closed. CLICK HERE
Bloodletters is also on an indefinite hiatus. No
submissions are being accepted. CLICK HERE
Rogue Worlds is changing its format to a print
and electronic anthology/magazine, and is closed to submissions
until further notice. Contributors whose work is scheduled for
issues beyond #13 should contact Doyle Eldon Wilmoth, Jr., the Rogue
Worlds Editor and Publisher, immediately at info@specficworld.com.
Those who are not yet under contract should submit their work

Agony in Black has been closed by its publisher.
NovelBooks, Inc., will be closing as of January 1, 2005.
The Ministry of Whimsy press will be on indefinite

Dated Markets (Anthologies, Contests, Special and Themed
Issues):
The New Women's Voices Chapbook Competition is
open to women who have never published a book-length collection
of poems. Deadline: January 15, 2005. Entry fee: $15. CLICK HERE
Literal Latte Food Verse Awards is looking for
submissions of "unpublished poems with food as an ingredient."
Deadline: January 15, 2005. Entry fee: $10 per set of 6 poems. CLICK HERE
WritersWeekly.com's 24-Hour Short Story Contest
begins January 22, 2005 at 12 noon Central Time. It's limited to
500 entrants and filling up fast. $5 entry fee. CLICK HERE
The third Between Kisses drabble contest is now
on. The theme is: "Eve and no Adam--the last woman in the
Universe." A drabble is a story of exactly 100 words.

Cleveland State University's Poetry Center Prizes:
First Book Competition & Open Competition is open to
booklength manuscripts of original poetry. Deadline: February 1,

The Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction is open
to English-language writers in the U.S. "Submissions may
include a collection of short stories, one or more novellas, or a
short novel." Deadline: February 1, 2005. Entry fee: $20. CLICK HERE
We Burned So Bright is a short story competition
being held by Powerswitch.org.uk. They are looking for
stories of any genre about what will happen once oil becomes too
expensive for today's common uses. Deadline: February 28, 2005.

The Bluestem Poetry Award sponsored by Emporia
State University is accepting submissions of original, book-length,
unpublished collections of poems. Deadline: March 1, 2005. Entry

Carnifex Press is will be looking for submissions of
"the best assassin stories we can find" for the second
of their Clash of Steel anthologies. Reading period is
January 1 to March 1, 2005. NOTE: Do not submit earlier or later.

Say... is opening a new reading period from
January 1 to April 15, 2005. The theme for that issue is "What's
the Combination?" All stories, poems and comics must somehow

News:
Parrish's Patch offers free open sessions with well-known
genre authors. At the end of January/beginning of February, the
guest author will be Anne Bishop. CLICK HERE
Our Losses:
Thomas Scott Winnett, February 4, 1962 - December 12,
2004. Winnett was a reviewer and staff member for Locus. CLICK HERE
Larry Buchanan died December 2, 2004, at the age of 81.
Buchanan made several movies, including Mars Needs Women, It's
Alive! and Swamp Creature. CLICK HERE
