New markets:
Shadowed Realms is a new webzine for dark Australian speculative fiction. Its focus is flash stories -- under 1000 words. They accept submissions from international authors, although their purpose is to bring out new Australian and Oceanic talent. Website
Illumen, a speculative poetry magazine, is published twice a year (April 1 and October 1) as a chapbook. The first issue will be published on October 1, 2004. Guidelines
Shades of Romance Magazine: A guide for multi-cultural literature, caters to readers and writers of multicultural literature. While the magazine is primarily about writing, they do accept short romance stories (all genres). Full guidelines.
Living Voices Magazine: Preserving the Past and the Present for the Future will begin to accept submissions August 1, 2004. "Someone once said that life is in the details, the moment-to-moment minutiae; that is what I want to see. Stories your grandparents, uncles, aunts and parents told you, the stories of their lives before, during and after wars, old letters, your stories and memories" Accepts non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. Writopia's E-Press is now open to novels from the public. "We are most interested in Mysteries, Fantasy and Science Fiction and strongly character oriented general fiction." Guidelines here.
Mytholog Short Fiction and Poetry Quarterly now pays $5 for fiction, $3 for flash fiction. Guidelines
Visions, the Magazine of Fantastic Queensland is a new Australian spec-fic magazine. Pays $5 Australian for short fiction. Guidelines
Market Changes:
Flesh & Blood, the dark fantasy fiction magazine, will no longer be accepting stories over 5,000 words long. Guidelines
Rumour has it that The Brutarian is not accepting stories longer than 4500 to 5000 wds long at this moment, although their guidelines say they have no length limits: Guidelines
Lone Star Stories, a speculative and poetry magazine primarily about Texas, no longer requires all submissions to have something to do with the state (subject matter or author) -- although they still prefer that. Guidelines
Tales of the Unanticipated is reading submissions for issue #26 that are postmarked by August 31, 2004. Guidelines
Chiaroscuro, the horror magazine, is closed to fiction until Sept. 2004 and to poetry until Jan 2005. Web page
I know I mentioned the Modern Magic anthology just last week. Now they say: "We are currently running about 6.5 weeks behind our original schedule. All manuscripts will be responded to in the order in which they were received. Manuscripts that were received in the first week of June will be responded to by mid-September." Guidelines
New Genre, which publishes "fiction that promotes craftsmanship and innovation in the fields of science and horror fiction", no longer accepts e-mail submissions and has a new web site here Guidelines are at: Guidelines
Closed Markets:
Fangoria is no longer publishing fiction. They say, "Fearful Fiction is not currently accepting submissions. If and when we start taking short stories again, an update and contact info will be placed on this site." Web page
Revision 14 ... a flash of inspiration, is no longer accepting short stories.
Multiverse Magazine has suspended publication.
Contests:
The Dark Krypt 2004 Halloween Short Story Competition closes on midnight, August 25, 2004. There is no fee. There are monetary prizes and all winners get published. Web page
Obituaries:
Roxanne Lynn Hutton passed away July 16, 2004, at age 50. A participant in the Critters Writers' Workshop, she had just won 2nd place in L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest.
