The Word in Writing by B.J. Muntain
Vol 1, Issue 4
Well, we seem to have a preponderance of non-American news
this week. That's probably because I just received my copy of The
Australian Science Fiction Bullsheet. There is American news
mentioned, but also Australian, British and Canadian. Since our
members seem to have taken over much of Earth, I don't want to
leave anyone out.
I don't guarantee any markets. Use at your own risk.
New Markets:
The Australian Science Fiction Forum will
publish short fiction and non-fiction. They say: "We are
interested in short speculative fiction in the broadest sense.
The quirkier the better. Stories can be serious or completely
silly. Experimental styles are okay as long as the thing is
intelligible." Maximum length is 3000 words. Their
submissions guidelines are here.
Changes:
Wicked Hollow has updated their guidelines as of
July 26th, and changed their pay rates. They now pay 1/4 cent per
word. The new guidelines are here.
Neverary: Speculative Fiction Writing, has
announced that it no longer has a length limit on poetry. They
pay $2 per poem or flash fiction, and $10 for short stories.
Guidelines here.
Dark Energy Speculative Fiction, an e-zine, has
started paying $10, plus readers can tip the writer anything they
want through PayPal. Guidelines
The First Line, the magazine where you have to
start your stories with the line given, has upped their
acceptable word count and pay: 300-3000 words, for $10 (US) plus
a copy. Guidelines here.
Challenging Destiny, a Canadian magazine of
science fiction and fantasy, is now electronic only. Guidelines
can be found here.
Crossroads Magic is now a paying market ($10 per
story). This e-zine will publish any genre. Website
They also have contests ($3 entry fee)
A Tangled Script of Intagible Soul Engravings (ATSOISE)
will continue with Gill Marshall as publisher.
Contests:
Albedo One, Ireland's Magazine of Science
Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, has launched a new short story
competition called the Aeon Award. The Grand Prize is 1,000
Euros. Six short-listed stories will also be published. Deadline
is Sept. 30, 2004. Entry fee: $2 US or 3 Euros. More information
on their website
Fish Publishing has announced a New Unpublished
Novel Award. Deadline is September 30th, 2004. The
editors promise that every entrant will receive a short comment
on their work, and a detailed critique can be requested for an
author's first chapter. You can even ask for the critique only. Fish
Publishing will publish the novel, and the writer will
receive a 1500 Euro advance on royalties. There are entrance fees
and fees for the critique. For more information, see: the website.
The Friends of Arthur Machen Short Story Competition is
looking for stories "in the spirit of Arthur Machen's own
writings, between 1,000 and 6,000 words." Because I couldn't
find a clear enough site with this information, I've posted it to
the Z7 forum under Information and Announcements.
Our Losses:
Irvin Yeaworth Jr. passed away July 19, 2004. He was
known for directing the 1958 Steve McQueen film, The Blob.

for many television shows and movies, including The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,

Mark K. Gilbert (1961-2004), publisher of Atsoise (A
Tangled Script of Intangible Soul Engravings), an on-line
magazine, as well as an author of novels, passed away after a
long illness. An obituary can be found on the Science Fiction and
Fantasy Writers of America site, here,
and a memorial can be found on the Atsoise website .
Author's Note
I'd like to thank people for the kind words I've been hearing
about this new venture of mine. I'm still open to suggestions and
questions. I would also be interested in hearing if this little
column has helped you publish something. Perhaps I'll add a
section on members' publishing successes. Tell me what you think
of this idea. Contact BJ with your writers market news.
