The Word in Writing by B.J. Muntain
Vol 1, Issue 5
We've got a mixed bag this week -- a bit of everything.
I do not guarantee any markets.
New Markets:
Aeon Speculative Fiction will open to
unsolicited submissions in November, 2004. This new e-zine/anthology
carries all genres of speculative fiction. Read their guidelines
here.
VACANCY, The Journal of Spectral Chatter,
is back, open to submissions of fiction, poetry and non-fiction.
This is an audio webzine. Guidelines are here here.
Premonitions, Pigasus Press's science
fiction and horror magazine, has relaunched this month (August,
2004). Website.
Changes:
Neometropolis has recently changed their
guidelines. They now pay 1-6 cents per word. See their guidelines.
31 Eyes E-zine Return times for August and
September may be longer than usual. Recently relaunched with a
new look, it features flash fiction and short stories of fantasy
and horror, but also e-publishes longer fiction. Guidelines.
Thomas Deja, who has several anthologies on the go, has
suffered a hard drive crash, affecting all his projects.
Contributors to Summer Infernal should hear from
him in the next month. A new reading period will be announced for
Spring Ressurectus. For more information on these
and other anthologies and projects, check out their website.
The Writers' Union of Canada has moved. Their new
address is:
The Writers' Union of Canada
90 Richmond Street East, Suite 200
Toronto ON M5C 1P1
Phone: 416-703-8982
Fax: 416-504-9090
Closed Markets:
According to one of the editors at DNA Publications, Absolute
Magnitude is closed to fiction submissions at this time.
I couldn't find anything that said how long they would be closed,
and the closure isn't on their guidelines page.
According to their site, Permutations: The Journal of
Unsettling Fiction is not accepting unsolicited fiction
submissions until after the first issue -- Summer 2004 -- is
published. However, word has it that they are no longer going to
publish this journal at all. Website.
Adventure Fiction Online is on hiatus. A Special
Note on their website says: "AFO is a huge
success with our readers. However due to financial constraints
the webzine is now on hiatus until further notice... We think
that the future will bring AFO back to a regular
publication." Website
Dark Animus is closed to submissions until Oct.
1, 2004 -- unless you are a subscriber: "subscribers can
submit any time." Guidelines here.
Contests:
The Second Short Story Grabber Contest, put on
by Ralan's SpecFic & Humor Webstravaganza. I don't
usually encourage contests that require entrance fees but Ralan's
is the most informative speculative fiction markets site I've
seen. Submissions are open until August 31, 2004. See the rules
here.
If you want to see just how helpful Ralan's is, check it out.
Sam's Dot Publishing has decided to make the Between
Kisses Drabble Contest a periodic anthology, to be
published three times per year. The second contest, with a theme
of 'Alien Brothel', has a deadline of Sept. 30, 2004. A 'drabble'
is a short story containing exactly 100 words. Website
The Modern World runs a quarterly fiction
contest for short short fiction written with a very specific
theme. The latest has a deadline of Sept. 15, 2004. More
information here.
Another flash fiction contest, Dead in Th13teen Flashes
2: Body Count, has a deadline of Sept. 31, 2004. Website.
Cemetery Dance Publications and Flesh and Blood
Press are sponsoring the 2005 World Horror Convention
Dark Fiction Contest, open to members of the 2005 World
Horror Convention. You can find the rules by going here
and clicking on the "WHC2005 Dark Fiction Contest Info"
link at the top right corner of the page.
