The Word in Writing by B.J. Muntain
Vol 1, Issue 8
Wow! From a slow week to a busy week! It looks like I'll have
to hold some stuff back for the next quiet week. You'll find a
number of dated markets (contests, anthologies, etc.), and even a
few jobs listed here.
I do not guarantee any markets.
New Markets:
Quercus-SF is open to submissions by
invitation only. Paul Brazier, previously production editor
for Interzone, has left that magazine to start up Quercus-SF.
Professional and semi-professional writers are invited to e-mail
the editor regarding
their qualifications to submit. New writers are invited to submit
their stories to the sendmeastory.co.uk
writer's workshop, where for a fee they can get professional
feedback on their story. Read more here.
Deathbus is a new horror magazine. They print
nine stories per issue, but only the one they feel is the best
gets paid the $35. Website
Zoiks! : Magazine of Humor, Entertainment and
Pop Culture, is a newly launched e-zine. Although I couldn't
find any actual submission guidelines on the site (I understand
you can e-mail for these),
I did find a list of people they're looking for. I've put some
information up on the Z7 Forum under Information and
Announcements. See their page here.
Feral Fiction: Words Raised by Wolves
will debut Sept. 15, 2004. Query first. They are looking for
horror, fantasy, science fiction and cross-over stories.
Submission guidelines.
Market Changes:
Amazing Stories, the classic magazine relaunched
this year, is now looking for a new Editor-in-Chief. Dave Gross
is leaving the magazine for a full-time writing career with a
video game company. Website
for the news. (check out if you want the job: here.)
Strange Horizons is looking for more staff: Art
Editor, Assistant Webmaster, Devlopment Coordinator and
Development Staff. All positions are unpaid volunteers, and none
are allowed to submit to the magazine. See the new look here,
and if you'd rather submit than work for free (they are a
professionally paying market), you can find the guidelines here
Abyss & Apex has undergone some changes, and
some computer problems. If you have submitted a work to this
market before June 19th and have not yet heard from them, e-mail
them at 'editor (at)
abyssandapex (dot) com' (this format is to cut down on spam,
which is what caused these problems in the first place). They are
not accepting any other submissions for the summer. Keep an eye
on their submissions page
for updates.
Abyss & Apex have also replaced most of their
editorial staff recently. Carol Burrell is now the Editor-in-Chief,
with Aleta Daknis as Associate Editor.
PoetryFox.com, a poetry market, is now closed.
Emperor's New Clothes Press is closed for
submissions until early- to mid-2005. Guidelines..
Dated Markets (Anthologies, Contests, Special Issues):

The Emily Chesley Reading Circle has announced the 4th annual Tundra

Our Losses:
Cheryl Anne Porter, 1951 - August 25, 2004, wrote
romance and historical mystery novels including Jessie's
Outlaw, Captive Angel and Prairie Song. She was
also a popular speaker and a teacher of fiction writing.
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, July 8, 1926 - August 24, 2004,
wrote On Death and Dying in 1969, which threw the medical
community on its ear by challenging the manner in which dying
patients were treated. In 1999, Time Magazine named her
one of "The Century's Greatest Minds."
Author's Note:
I've included some contests that require reading fees. I don't
usually recommend them, so I would be interested in knowing what
people think of these. Contact me using this form. I'm
also open to other ideas and suggestions.
