The Word in Writing by B.J. Muntain
Vol 1, Issue 9
Another busy week in the genre fiction world! Note that I've
included a couple of anthology markets that pay 'in royalties.'
Depending on the publisher and/or the editor, the amount of
royalties can vary, and may be practically nothing.
I guarantee no markets.
New Markets:
New publisher, Permuted Press, is looking for
submissions of book length horror, dark fantasy or science
fiction stories dealing with apocalyp, disaster or survival
themes. To find their submissions guidelines, go here
and scroll down to the Submissions link.
Market Changes:
Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine would like
submitters to note that "the slush-o-matic will be
undergoing a transdimensional service over the next few weeks, so
responses might be a bit slower than usual." Website
Chiaroscuro is once more open to fiction
submissions. Poetry submissions are still closed until January 1,
2005. They want dark, well-written fiction, and pay 5 cents per
word for it. Guidelines
The Dark Krypt has undergone a number of changes.
It's new e-mail address is darkkrypt @ consolidated. net,
necessitated by a change of server. They have also decided to
move to .pdf books instead of e-books. As well, their guidelines
have been revised to include their annual Halloween Contest. Guidelines
Futurismic welcomes Tobias Buckell to the team.
All submissions are closed until January 2005. Replies have been
sent to all but those stories being further considered, so if you
haven't heard from them yet, they may still be considering your
submission. Final selections should be made by the end of the
month. Website.
Ideomancer has raised its length limit, but has
lowered its maximum payment. It now pays 3 cents per word up to $30,
but accepts stories as long as 7000 wds. Website here,
go down links at the left until you see submissions under 'ideots.'
Paradox is overstocked on speculative fiction,
so priority will be given to pure historical fiction submissions.
If you are sending a pure historical fiction story (meaning no
speculative fiction elements) be sure to say this clearly in the
cover letter. No multiple submissions are allowed -- send a
story, and wait until you hear from the editor before sending
others. Guidelines
AlienSkin is going bimonthly as of October 1,
2004. Their current needs include flash fiction (500 - 1000 wds).
However, all "Sci-fi Slots Are Filled For Oct/Nov Issue."
More information on their web site.
(Extra note: AlienSkin Magazine will give a short
critique of rejected stories. If you send here, be prepared for
an honest criticism of your work. If you don't want this, say so
in your cover letter.)
Marsdust is temporarily closed to fiction.
Current submissions will be returned with comments.
Dated Markets (Anthologies, Contests, Themed issues, etc.)

Hardboiled: These anthologies are being scrapped

News:
With the help of the European Southern Observatory's HARPS
spectrograph on the 3.6 meter telescope at La Silla Science
Operations, a group of European scientists have discovered the smallest
non-Solar planet to date, being only 14 times the mass of
Earth -- about the same size as Uranus. Read more about this
exciting discovery at ESO's web site.
Author's Note
I find the above discovery exciting -- but then, I've always
known there were many Earth-like planets out there. We just
haven't found them all yet. And remember, you can get hold of me
using this form if
you have any suggestions or ideas for this column.
