New Markets:
Speakeasy Comics is a new graphic literature publishing

Market Changes:
Tangent Online has found a new editor to replace
Chris Markwyn -- Eugie Foster. Changes are currently being
made to their website, including a move to a new server. CLICK HERE
Abyss & Apex is now open to poetry
submissions again. It is still closed to fiction and flash
fiction submissions. CLICK HERE
Dark Energy Speculative Fiction has new
guidelines -- they are looking for stories dealing with hard
science, religion, or the end of the world. They are not
interested in much fantasy or horror. CLICK HERE
AlienSkin magazine is open to poetry and flash
fiction submissions (between 500 to 1000 words) but not to longer
fiction. CLICK HERE
Naked Snake Press, once it starts accepting submissions
again on March 1, 2005 (see below in Closed Markets), will no
longer pay for submissions, though it will remain as an exposure

Wildside Press is changing its focus from classic
reprints to contemporary science fiction, fantasy and mystery,
and more pulp-related projects. Alan Rodgers will be leaving
Wildside. CLICK HERE
Marvel Comics is entering the trade publishing world
with agreements with four major publishing houses: DK Publishing
(children's), HarperCollins (movie tie-ins), Simon &
Schuster's Pocket Books (adult paperback novels), and Meredith
Books (children's book products.) "Marvel Comics' award-winning
creative talent will work closely with each publishing house".

Comics publisher Top Cow has a new web site ( CLICK HERE ), and a
new submissions policy: "Top Cow now only accepts mailed
submissions to our office." They do not accept unsolicited
manuscripts, although they will look at artists' submissions. CLICK HERE
Regina Weese is looking for poetry, photography,
fiction and non-fiction on topics of interest to Canadians. CLICK HERE

Closed Markets:
Paizo Publishing has announced the suspension of Amazing
Stories and Undefeated magazines. CLICK HERE
Penumbric, the webzine, is closing down and no
longer accepting submissions. The December 2004 issue was its
last.
The poetry publication, Poe Little Thing, is now
closed to all submissions but art submissions. CLICK HERE
Naked Snake Press is also closed to all submissions but
art until March 1, 2005. Anything received before then will be
deleted. This includes all Naked Snake Press publications. CLICK HERE
Dated Markets (Anthologies, Contests, Special and Themed
Issues):
The Horrors Beyond anthology is open for
submissions. "The focus is on humanity, alien-ness, and
technologies that are designed to save humanity, but instead
brings about its downfall." Due date: March 1, 2005, or

The Futuristic, Fantasy & Paranormal Special Interest
Chapter of the Romance Writers of America is holding the Prism
2005 contest for published writers of speculative romance.
Novels and novellas must have been published in 2004. Entre fee:
$25 for RWA members, $30 for non-members. Deadline: March 1, 2005.

The Uncle John's Hysterical Society is looking for
submissions for Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Plunges into
Michigan. "General categories include local legends and
folklore, history, famous sons and daughters, jokes, quotes,
sports, universities, traditions, local haunts, and weird and
unusual places. Articles should be written with the trademark
Uncle John's humor and flair." A 25 to 50 word synopsis of
your article idea should be submitted to michigan.submissions@advmkt.com
as soon as possible. If approved, first drafts of these articles

Sage of Consciousness, a literary e-zine, is
looking for submissions for their issue themed "Soul
Foraging: Searching for Self". Deadline: April 10, 2005. CLICK HERE
They are open to submissions year round, though, and their list

The Zombie Aid anthology is looking for stories and
poems about zombies. This anthology doesn't pay -- all proceeds
go to Comic Aid, so consider it a donation. Deadline: September 1,

News:
The fourth Free Comic Book Day will be held on May 7,
2005. On that date, "anyone can walk into a participating
comic book specialty store and receive a free comic book, with no
purchase required (while supplies last)." The idea behind
Free Comic Book Day is to get media and public attention and draw

Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, has put out a
call for papers for a conference titled The Uses of the
Science Fiction Genre: An Interdisciplinary Symposium, to be
held in October of this year. Abstracts should be sent in by
April 15, 2005. CLICK HERE
The Helen McCloy/MWA Scholarship for Mystery Writing is
accepting applications until February 25, 2005. The Scholarship
"seeks to nurture talent in mystery fiction, nonfiction,
playwriting, and screenwriting." CLICK HERE
Our Losses:
Sven Christer Swahn, August 3, 1933 - January 15, 2005.
A prolific science fiction, horror and fantasy author, he also
translated books by authors such as Philip K. Dick and Ursula K.
Le Guin into Swedish. CLICK HERE
