Market Changes:

Another Chicago Magazine, a literary magazine which publishes short fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry and more, will be starting another reading period on February 1, 2005, to end August 31. CLICK HERE

The Threepenny Review is open to manuscripts now -- they do not read between September and December. CLICK HERE

Tangent Online has a new web presence at CLICK HERE.

Adventure Fiction Online has changed their pay rate. Although most submissions still net $5 each, famous writers will get 5 cents per word. CLICK HERE

Abyss & Apex are making more changes. They are going quarterly and are instituting reading periods for fiction and flash fiction, although poetry may be submitted year round. The first reading period will be April 1 to May 15, 2005. For more information, check their site at CLICK HERE.

Dreams and Nightmares, the magazine of fantastic poetry, has new guidelines at CLICK HERE. They are currently overstocked on short-short fiction.

The web and e-mail server of SDO Detective, SDO Fantasy and SDO Ghost is down for maintenance, but should be back up soon. DETECTIVE, FANTASY, GHOST

Raven Electrick: Tales of Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror and Mystery will be open to submissions between February 1 and February 28, 2005. CLICK HERE

Dreamwave Productions, the only Canadian independent comics publisher, has shut down operations. CLICK HERE

The Drexel Online Journal is not accepting poetry or fiction submissions, at least until June, 2005. CLICK HERE

The Orchard Press Online Mystery Magazine is no longer accepting submissions of stories. "We intend to keep the site online indefinitely and will continue to publish stories in our inventory until mid-2005." CLICK HERE

Aeon Speculative Fiction is closed to submissions until around May, 2005. CLICK HERE

Artemis Magazine seems to be on an indefinite hiatus and closed to submissions. CLICK HERE

The Writers Publishing is going on hiatus until 2006 due to lost funding. CLICK HERE

The W.B. Yeats Society of N.Y. Poetry Competition invites submissions of previously unpublished poems in English. Entrance fee: $8 for the first poem, $7 for each subsequent poem. Deadline: February 15, 2005. CLICK HERE

The Highlights for Children 2005 Fiction Contest is looking for submissions of funny, unpublished stories for children ages 2 to 12. "Stories should have fewer than 500 words (please indicate word count on manuscript)" Mail submission with a SASE to: Fiction Contest, Highlights for Children, 803 Church Street, Honesdale, PA 18431 USA. Note: Highlights for Children buys all rights. Entrance fee: None. Deadline: February 28, 2005.

The Thirteenth Annual James Jones First Novel Fellowship, put on by the James Jones Literacy Society, offers $10,000 to an American novelist writing their first novel. Entrance fee: $20. Deadline: March 1, 2005. CLICK HERE

Undergraduates enrolled full-time in university in the United States or Canada in the 2004/2005 academic year are eligible for The Stony Brook Short Fiction Prize. Deadline: March 1, 2005. CLICK HERE

The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies offers the Independent Research and Creative Works Awards, for an individual "researching or writing on some aspect of the American experience in the Mountain West." Deadline: March 15, 2005. CLICK HERE

The Abroad Short Fiction Contest is open to unpublished fiction. Entrance fee: $20. Deadline: March 31, 2005. First prize is the winner's choice of Abroad’s Tuscany Writers’ Workshops. CLICK HERE

The Quills, a Celebration of the Written Word, are a new American book award, similar to the People's Choice awards, where the consumer decides the winner. CLICK HERE

The Library of Congress Copyright Office is looking into the copyright available to 'orphan works' -- those for which the copyright owner is difficult or impossible to locate. They are looking for comments from interested parties on what should happen to the copyright on these works. CLICK HERE
