New Markets:
Stephen D. Rogers Presents, a new online
publication edited by the genre writer, will showcase one story
each issue. Mr. Rogers is looking for 1000-word stories, any

Nature has once more begun to publish short-short
speculative fiction stories in its 'Futures' series. No
unsolicited submissions, but queries can be forwarded to Henry
Gee at _Nature_, The Macmillan Building, 4-6 Crinan Street,

Roaring Brook Press has christened its new graphic novel
imprint First Second. It will be led by Mark Siegel as

Market Changes:
Lovecraft's Weird Mysteries has new guidelines. CLICK HERE
Kent S. Johnson will be the new CEO of Highlights for
Children. Johnson, like his predecessor, is a decendent of
the founders of the corporation. CLICK HERE
Avon Books has promoted Erika Tsang to senior editor,
while Selina McLemore is now an associate editor. CLICK HERE
Ballantine/Ivy has added two more acquiring editors:
Arielle Zibrak, assistant editor, and Signe Pike, editorial

HQN Books will no longer accept unagented or
unsolicited submissions. Queries are still accepted. CLICK HERE
Steam Engine Time, the intercontinental fanzine,
is being revived by original founder Bruce Gillespie with new co-editor
Janine Stinson.
Note: the snail mail address for Mr. Gillespie in most

The Corpse Magazine has been delayed, but is

Wicked Hollow is also still around, though the
ninth issue has been delayed several months. Jon Hodges, editor,

Lullaby Hearse has fallen behind on submissions
and is trying to catch up. They are also looking for people to

Closed Markets:
Inferno!, a professional market for short genre
fiction in the UK, is ceasing publication after its January/February
issue.
Another Chapter, an e-zine for serialized
fiction, seems to have disappeared. Its web page has fallen into
the hands of a domain marketer, and its emails are bouncing.
Plots with Guns, a crime fiction e-zine, is
closing. There is, however, mention of a possible print anthology
to be published by Dennis McMillan. CLICK HERE

OnceWritten.com is holding their Winter Poetry
Writing Contest. Entrance fee: $10 per poem. Deadline:

The Sylvia K. Burack Scholarship will be awarded to an
entrant who is 18 or over, a full-time student at a university or
college in the U.S. or Canada, and who has written a short essay

The 2nd annual Tangent Lines Poetry Contest is looking
for submissions of poems inspired by paintings. To view the
paintings, enter the Night of Artists web site and click
on the 'Tangent Poetry Contest link' on the right. Entry fee: $5.

AuthorMania.com is holding two contests: The
AuthorMania.com Writing Contest (for short stories up to 5000

The Faux Faulkner and Imitation Hemingway Contests are
open to entries of parodies up to 500 words long. Entry fee: None

The Baltimore Review's 2005 Creative Nonfiction

The Australian Horror Writers Association is holding
it's first short story competition. Categories are: under 1000
word flash stories and 1000-8000 word longer stories. Entry fees:

News:
An asteroid has been named Asteroid Douglasadams.
Originally known as 2001 DA42, this particular space rock seemed
perfect for the honour -- 2001 was the year Douglas Adams passed
away, DA was (obviously) his initials, and 42 is -- as all fans
of Adams' Hitchhiker series know -- the Ultimate Answer. CLICK HERE
Our Losses:
Bruce Cassiday died January 12, 2005 at the age of 84.
A prolific writer of short stories and novels of many genres, he
wrote under various pen names such as Nick Carter, Lee
Falk, Carson Bingham and Mary Ann Drew. He had
also been fiction editor of Argosy and Adventure
magazines.
Ernst Mayr (July 5, 1904 - February 3, 2005). Mayr, an
ornithologist and evolutionary biologist, is credited with the
definition of 'species' as "a group of individuals that are
capable of breeding with one another, but not with others outside

John Vernon (1932 to February 3, 2005). Actor Vernon
was best known as Dean Worner in Animal House, but has
also been in several science fiction films, including the voice
of Big Brother in the original 1984.
Ossie Davis (1912 to February 4, 2005). Davis, actor
and civil rights supporter, appeared in many films and television
shows, including The Stand, Eddie Murphy's Doctor
Doolittle, and Roots: The Next Generation. CLICK HERE
Lucy Freeman died December 29, 2004, at the age of 88.
A New York Times reporter, she also wrote several books,
