also more news than usual. A lot has been happening in the
business recently.

New Markets:
Prometheus Books has launched their new science fiction
and fantasy imprint, Pyr. Pyr will publish only science
fiction and fantasy novels, no other genre or length. They prefer

Market Changes:
Joy Ralph is the new Editor in Chief of the Internet
Review of Science Fiction. John Frost, the previous
editor, resigned in November, 2004. CLICK HERE
Playboy has a new editorial address: Playboy

Closed Markets:
Quantum Barbarian will be closing with its
Summer 2005 issue. Editor Tyrone Brooks is not accepting any more
submissions. If you have submitted to this market but have not
yet heard from them, consider your manuscript rejected, and send

Beyond the Blackened Mirror: Tales of Dark Romance
has extended its deadline to March 20, 2005. They're looking for
"Dark, edgy erotic romance with gritty themes, daring
heroines who take an active part in the story rather than letting
the hero do all the work, darker or possibly flawed heroes,

The ReadingWriters Sci Fi contest offers this challenge:
"The year is 3037 and, despite the predictions of

scifidimensions is holding their 2005 Short

The inaugural short story competition of The Australian
Horror Writers Association is open to submissions from anyone.
There are two categories: flash fiction (up to 1000 words) and
short stories (up to 8000 words). Entry fee: $5 for flash

WinningWriters' War Poetry Contest is
open to poetry on the theme of war. Entry fee: $12. Deadline: May

Carnifex Press is looking for submissions for it's fourth
anthology, the second in the horror genre. Florida Horror:
Tales From Florida is not looking for stories by
Floridans so much as stories that take place in that state.

Charm, Beauty, Strangeness will be "an anthology
of speculative relationships" to be edited by the 'Vile

The Fortean Bureau is looking for submissions
for a special poetry edition to be edited by John Borneman. A
guest commentary will be given by Bruce Boston, the first Grand
Master of the Science Fiction Poetry Association. A couple short
stories that feature poetry as a theme may also be included in
this issue. No deadline is given, but as this is for their
September, 2005 issue, earlier is probably better than later. CLICK HERE
Mosaic Press is seeking "science fiction that
includes elements of or makes references to literature, music and
the arts" for their third anthology in this series, North
of Infinity III: Parnassus Unbound. Reading Period: April

News:
The Persephone Writers Organization is looking for
women who write dark fiction, non-fiction and poetry. They want
to provide development opportunities, support and "a unified
voice against discrimination and inequities in the treatment of
female authors of dark fiction and non-fiction." For

The School of Literature, Communication and Culture (LCC) is
holding a two-day symposium (March 31 to April 1, 2005) at the
Bill Moore Student Success Center of the Georgia Institute of
Technology. It will be about Monstrous Bodies in Science,
Fiction, and Culture: Celebrating 25 Years of the Fantastic in

The Science Fiction Research Association is looking for
papers on science fiction-related topics for its conference to be
held June 23 - 26, 2005, in Las Vegas, NV. Deadline for proposal

Simon & Schuster's Pocket Books division is
launching a new size of mass paperbacks, somewhere between the
size of trade paperbacks and the usual paperback, called Premium
Editions. These will usually be reprints of best-selling titles. CLICK HERE
Our Losses:
Hans Bethe (July 2, 1906 - March 6, 2005). One of the
great pioneers of 20th-century physics and atomic science, Bethe
helped to develop the first atom bomb, and later became a
champion of nuclear arms control.
Jef Raskin (1944 - February 26, 2005). Raskin was the
Apple programmer who gave the Apple MacIntosh its name.
Author's Note
Remember: if there is a reading period, do not send
anything in before or after that period. It wouldn't be the end
of the world -- they're not going to come hunt you down and force
you to take it back. They'll just delete it or trash it. Hmm,
come to think of it, that could be the end of the world...
