New Markets:

Reid's Magazine is a new Australian magazine of poetry and short fiction of any genre, but not considered 'literary'. Guidelines are not yet on-line, so e-mail for them. CLICK HERE

Escape Pod, The science fiction podcast magazine, is a new electronic science fiction and fantasy market offering audio files of short stories. CLICK HERE

Market Changes:

As of September 2006, the Harlequin Romance and Silhouette Romance lines of Harlequin/Silhouette will no longer be published. At that time, a single line of 'sweet' romance fiction will be launched, headed by editor Bryony Green. The stories will be 50,000 to 55,000 words long, with no explicit sexual detail. Other news from Harlequin: Submissions are being accepted for the Harlequin Mills & Boon Temptation (M&B Sensual Romance) line. Senior Editor Tessa Shapcott is looking for works of about 60,000 words that deliver "a feel-good experience, focusing on the kind of relationships that women between the ages of 18 and 35 aspire to." The Writers' Workshop of Asheville, NC, is holding a contest to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Winners will win the chance to meet judges Kurt Vonnegut and Peter Matthiessen. Science Fiction and Fantasy Female Writers (SF-FFW) is launching the new Roots of Writing Award in honour of seven influential female science fiction and fantasy authors: Betty Ballantine, Madeleine L'Engle, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula K. Le Guin, Kate Wilhelm, Joanna Russ, and Andre Norton.

The Irish bookstore chain, Hughes & Hughes, will be launching the Irish Book Awards next year. These will include the current Irish Novel of the Year, the Irish Children's Book of the Year, the Irish Non-Fiction Book of the Year, and the Irish Book of the Year. CLICK HERE

John Joseph Adams, assistant editor of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, has declared June, 2005, to be Slush Writer Appreciation Month. CLICK HERE

Our Losses:

Patricia York (died May 21, 2005, at the age of 57) Pat York wrote short fiction which was published in various magazines. Her stories were finalists in the Writers of the Future Contest and the Nebula Awards.

Samuel Herbert Post (January, 1924 - May 20, 2005) As editor for the MacFadden-Bartell Corporation, Post published such writers as Poul Anderson, Gordon Dickson and H.P. Lovecraft. CLICK HERE

Frank Gorshin (1934 - May 17, 2005) Gorshin was an accomplished actor whose many film and television roles included The Riddler in the Batman series and Commander Bele in a Star Trek episode. CLICK HERE

Howard Morris (1919 - May 21, 2005) An actor, Morris provided voices for such cartoons as The Flintstones and Atom Ant.

Henry Corden (1920 - May 19, 2005) Corden's acting career included such roles as Fred Flintstone's voice in The Flintstones, and the voice of General Urko in Return to the Planet of the Apes.
