The Word in Writing by B.J. Muntain
Vol 2, Issue 48, July 6, 2005
This is the first of (probably) four summer issues. Since I won't be able to keep up with all the news, I'll be giving you lists of markets. This first list will be specialty markets --markets that specialize in one subgenre or sub-subgenre.
I do not guarantee any markets.
Book Publishers
Gothic Press
"Gothic Press seeks fiction, poetry, and scholarship and criticism manuscripts up to 20,000 words. Fiction and poetry may be in any style or approach, as long as horror, Gothic, or dark fantasy elements are present."

Green Knight Publishing
"Green Knight publishes Arthurian fiction. This presents a wide range of expression, from the literary traditions of Malory, to the mythic Mabinogion, historical Dark Ages as in the Goddodin, and mystical or theological aspects of the Grail cycle."

Revelation Press
"We specialize in horror, dark fantasy and mystery titles for the Christian market."
Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense
"This new sub-brand within the Love Inspired line is a series of edge-of-the-seat, contemporary romantic suspense tales of intrigue and romance featuring Christian characters facing challenges to their faith
and to their lives."

Periodicals (Magazines, Webzines, etc.)
Because all magazines have their niche market, I'm only listing those magazines that have a very limited range within their market. I'm also listing mostly professional or semi-professional paying markets. If I added in too many others, I'd be doing this for weeks!
Adbusters
"We relish all truly political materials, whether they be scholarly probes into the decline of civilization, environmental forays into the forests, sci-fi carpet rides into cyberspace or humorous spoofs about commercial culture."
Anthrolations
"Stories should center around the main character's interaction with others around him or her, and how it changes their direction in life -- for good or bad (or how it destroys those around them without changing THEM at all). The main character should be anthropomorphic or zoomorphic."
Note: Pays 1/2 cent per word.

Aurealis: Australian Fantasy and Science Fiction
"Stories do not have to be explicitly Australian, although we always like to see some with Australian characterisation and background, provided the local element is not merely a self-conscious insertion into a standard plot."
Note: Non-Australians must query first.
Dark Fluidity
"The important part here is promotion. I will much more likely take something from an author who has just edited an anthology, or who has a book and/or chapbook coming out, and Id prefer to keep the timing rather close."
City Slab: Urban Tales of the Grotesque
"Im always on the lookout for taut, multi-leveled urban horror. There is a uniqueness to life lived in an urban setting. Show me the grit and intensity of your characters lives whether they are homeless, dope-fiends, or the well-to-do power brokers."
The Magazine of Speculative Poetry
"I want more than just images. I want a poem to take me someplace I haven't been before. Have a fresh look at an old trope. I am more concerned with a good poem first, then a speculative poem."
Tales from the Transdimensional Horror Express
"The reader finds themselves onboard a phantom express train in the company of an elderly and rather eccentric band of revenant dead travellers all of whom, naturally, have their own weird, macabre and chilling tales to tell."
Anthologies
I'm only including the ones that will be open until the end of the summer. Though all anthologies have some kind of theme, most of the following place further restrictions on the material.
Millenium Gear: Steampunk Stories For A New Generation
"Needs: Stories set strictly in a Steampunk milieu. No straight Fantasy or Science-Fiction. Victorian and modern, or combinations of both are equally welcome. Leave us breathless with originality. Believable past and alternate history worlds essential."
Deadline: August 21, 2005, or until full.
The Outcast
"The outcast must be central to the story, although not necessarily present. The outcast could be a person, a community, an organisation, an animal, a machine but they must be in some way cut off from the norm, cast out of the world."
NOTE: Only Australian citizens or residents may submit.
Deadline: August 31, 2005.
Poetic Chaos
"This anthology will be a themed collection of Lovecraftian verse focusing on the mighty soul and messenger of the Outer Gods, the Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathotep. Connection to Nyarlathotep can be obvious or obscure, so long as the poet is willing to explain the relationship if asked."
Deadline: When filled.
Spicy Slipstream Stories
"What we're looking for is work that embraces both the traditions of the old "spicy" pulps (not just adventure, but adventure and bosoms out to here!) and the stylistic innovations and reader affect of that non-genre genre, slipstream."
Deadline: October 15, 2005.
Zombie Aid
"ZOMBIE AID is an anthology about, well zombies. We want stories of the undead."
Note: This is a non-paying, charitable market. All proceeds go to Comic Relief.

These are definitely not all the specialty publications, or even all those with professional rates. These are a smattering, to show that yes, there really is a market for everything! I hope you enjoyed this topical column. Let me know by contacting me HERE.
